The word us is very useful, when one is thinking about the history of Bartos prefix. Even the kennel name is registered just by me, all the hard work has not been done by one person. I have been privileged to have the most encouraging parents. They have been helping me from the very start until today all the way. I have also had the luxury to meet some of the most talented terrier people round the world. They have been so kind to give me important advice on the breeds (especially terrier breeds) I have been associated with. Also the families of the terriers I have owned or bred have been really cooperative. All the help, advice and encouragement I have received has made the Bartos terriers existing.
My interest on dogs and other animals started as I was very young. It is of course very typical for children to be very curious as it comes to nature and animals. My nanny Mrs. Helga Utti gave me really good possibility to get associated with dogs. Her family pet Elsa was very friendly female crossbreed dog, who absolutely adored children and the best nerves with them. She now and then had one litter of puppies. Naturally I was more than happy to assist, when Aunt Helga fed the puppies. I found it so interesting to see Elsa´s pups growing and starting to walk and so on. Those moments are so valuable to me and still sometimes I am remembering Elsa´s friendly expression.
It took a while, before I did get my first dog. That was very clever thinking from my parents, because I was far too young when starting endless begs for having a dog. I was round 13 years of age, when I finally got my first dog. He was an airedale male called and registered with name Pluto. The year was anyway 1976. The breed was not solely chosen by me. I was so sure. that the right dog breeds were grand danoise and rottweiler. My parents were hesitating to have such big dogs. So the size was to minimize. I was in the end satisfied with an airedale, because someone told me it was a good breed for hunting lions in Africa. So I was happy to have one lion hunter and easily cheated.

The pictures above; left: Pluto and his proud owner 1977, middle: a snapshot of Ch Pluto in the ring while winning his third CC 1981, right: the same year Pluto and me in our garden in a photo taken by Andrea v Bardeleben (v.d. Neidenburg airedales, Germany)
Pluto´s new owner was so active to try almost anything with him. Running round in woods and nature was the most popular mutual hobby. I was also very interested training obedience with my new fiend. Pluto did not really enjoy of this master and servant play. Still we were joining the obedience training some years. The result of our co-work in obedience was okay, but nothing to be too proud of. Hunting lions or anything else with my best friend was absolute zero. He did not have any kind of real hunting abilities. Pluto was too friendly with all humans and animals.
Dog Shows were something we tried too. Pluto´s outgoing temperament suited the shows well. He enjoyed every minute of a show day and so did I. There I met other airedale owners and terrier people. That´s how I started to be more interested in airedales and soon I wanted to know more about other terrier breeds too.
There were three ladies who influenced my dog interest in the beginning a great deal. Pirjo Hjelm (kennel Big Lady´s) was the trimmer of my Pluto until I learned to groom and prepare him myself. Her encouragement and advice helped me a lot. Pirjo lived at that time with Mrs Edith Ollinen, when we brought our Pluto first times to her for to be trimmed. Mrs Ollinen was very famous cocker spaniel breeder and was one of the first professional trimmers in Finland. It was highly interesting for me to visit Mrs Ollinen and Pirjo in Helsinki with or without my dog. Edith Ollinen´s stories were really amusing and her wise words are still today very useful.
Mag. phil. Marie-Louise Molander von Bonnsdorff had also a great influence in my dog sport career from the end 70´s. She was the one who introduced me to Mr Arthur and Mrs Mavis Lodge (Mynair airedales). Mrs Molander von Bonnsdorff gave me the possibility to handle and prepare her beautiful GB, Int Ch Mynair Nevergivin. In the beginning 0f 80´s we showed "Ned" in various Scandinavian countries.

When I was still at high school I spent two summers with Mr and Mrs Lodge at Mynair kennels in Yorkshire, England. Those months with their beautiful airedales, going to shows in UK and all the experience while my staying with the Mynairs was my true high school with terriers. Arthur Lodge was a great pedagogue. He was very skillful and experienced terrier enthusiast. He was an international dog show judge in different terrier breeds. Mrs Mavis Lodge is also highly experienced airedale and terrier specialist. I have had a possibility to enjoy of her knowledge while "talking dogs" with her. Those moments have been more than valuable for me. I have been privileged to know her over 30 years. Mavis is one of the most warm hearted and helpful persons, that I know. I am sure all her friends could say the same.
After being in England with Arthur and Mavis I started handling at shows more other than my own dogs. I find that very useful too. That is one way to learn about various characters of dogs. As it comes to temperaments, I had also a great possibility to do my military service at the Niinisalo Veterinary School. Our daily routines were to take care the dogs owned by our army, train them and use them for guarding purposes. One part of our schooling was to assist at the veterinary practice. The most of my year 1982 I spent in army.

The pictures above; all three pictures are from Niinisalo Veterinary School, while doing my military service
So here were some details of how I started to have dogs as my most beloved hobby. Much has happened during these 34 years. I have had a joy to meet lots of "doggy people" and dogs too. I am really thankful for that. Here I would like to name some years and happenings during my "career" with dogs from the beginning of 80´s.

1980
Staying My first summer at Mynair kennels. That same year came Ch Mynair Nevergivin to Finland.
1982
That year I was doing my military service at the Niinisalo Veterinary School.
1983
Our second airedale Mynair Country Cousin came to Finland. "Oscar" was our important family member and especially loved by my father. The same year I handled for the first time Mrs Ritva Josefsson´s airedale bitch Ch Soft-Air Erica. From that first time with "Elli" at a show we started regular co work with Ritva. I handled and prepared several Soft-Air champions during 80´s, 90´s and the beginning of this century.
1986
The Schöneberg family with their v.d. Scönenbergen/of Paper Maker airedales and wire fox terriers offered me to stay with them some months. During my stay I prepared and handled Mr Wilhelm and Mrs Bärbel Scöneberg´s terriers. Then I also had a good chance to import jointly with Ritva Josefsson Mr and Mrs Scöneberg´s airedale dog Ch A-B-C Of Paper Maker to Finland. That same year was born my Ch airedale bitch Soft-Air Light Of Fire. She was co-owned with Mrs Tuula Halonen. "Lucy" was by ABC and out of Ritva´s Soft-Air Erica. She was with her sisters and brothers the top winner in airedales and terriers the end of 80`s and the beginning 90`s.
1988-89
Those years I stayed 11 months at the Beacytan kennels in England. During my stay with Mr and Mrs Forsman I was responsible for preparing and handling their show airedales. When living with Berit and Gunnar Forsman I had a good chance to go round english dog shows. Then I saw the first time welsh terrier male Purston Give´Em Grief. I was hooked. What a character and dog! His breeder and owner Mr Michael Collins told me, that his litter sister "Pixie" Purston Give´Em Stick was for sale. That´s how I got my first welsh terrier. She was a true character just like his brother and greatly loved by a great number of people. Soon I also purchased from Michael a welsh terrier male Purston Hot Stuff "Jacko" and a bitch Dreargi Indian Skimmer Of Purston "Annie". Annie went later to Astrid Löhnert (now Clyde) to Germany. Jacko came to Finland and was co-owned with Ritva Josefsson.
During my stay with Forsmans I also purchased from Mr Frank Kellet a lakeland terrier male Ravelsaye Riffleman Of Wiredot for Mrs Marjukka and Mr Pekka Sarkanen. "Paddy" was later jointly showed with Sarkanens here in Finland. Also 1988 our airedale Ch Soft-Air Light Of Fire was the top airedale in Finland. "Lucy" was expertly prepared and handled that year by my friend Susanna Söderholm (kennel Bayjet) here in Finland.
1990
My first welsh terrier litter was born. The mother of the litter was Pixie. Later from these two males Bartos Big Time "Masi" became Am, Int, Fin and Est champion.
1992
Welsh terriers Bartos Daily Double and - Duty-Free were born. Only one bitch and a dog were in that litter. They both became international champions. Daily Double "Vappu" was also a group and BIS winner.
1996
Welsh terrier male Ch Bartos Full Back "Barti" won breed at the Budapest/Wien World Show. Also Champions Bartos Gershwin (male) and Bartos Gala (female) started their show careers.
1998
That year three champion welsh terrier bitches was born. Bartos Hippy Chick, Hysteria, Halfmillion and High Voltage all got their titles. Halfmillion "Milla" and High Voltage "Xara" became international champions and other two sisters are also cacib winners. Xara is the foundation bitch of the successful High Voltages kennel owned by Katja and Heini Kelloniemi here in Finland. It has been a great pleasure to see Katja´s and Heini´s excellent work with welsh terriers. Milla is the foundation bitch of Mrs Anu Keerd´s Ak Mil Vista kennel in Estonia. These both kennels have influenced the breed in the best possible way.
2001
The first scottish terrier joined our Bartos team. Raijaj Pack O´Legend "Lola" was purchased from Mrs Raija Järvinen. Also the same year was born the welsh terrier male Bartos Jump "Taavi" owned by Nina Manner. Taavi has had a really successful show career. He is Int, Fin, Est and S champion. His wins in agility are legendary. He has also been successful in obedience. Nina´s prefix is Ronesco. She started her breeding in welsh with Ch Bartos Isadora.
2002
Our first scottish terriers puppies were born. The three bitches became champions. Bartos Polyester, Pip and Polka Dot became mums later.
2004
Ch Bartos Polka Dot "Eevi" was the most winning scottish terrier bitch in Finland.
2007
Ch Bartos Rose Royce was the most winning scottie bitch in Finland and shared the same amount of points for top scottie with her cousin Ch Joachim (dam Bartos Pip).
2008
Ch Bartos Sugar Babe gained her title and the Bartos Ultra -scottie litter was born.
All these happenings and facts from the past have moulded the Bartos terriers as they are at the moment. As I said in the beginning of this text I have not been alone with my dogs and breeding. I have been influenced and helped by number of people. All the ones who have had their supporting role in my life would know it. Big thanks to all my friends!
I have amongst being active in breeding and showing all these years taken part of various dog club activities. For example I have been a member of committees of our Airedale terrier club, the Lakeland terrier Club, The Welsh Terrier Club the Scottish Terrier Club and the Terrier Club Of Finland.
As a breeder I try to keep in mind good temperament, health and beauty too. I think it is also important to read and remember the breed standard. A breeder should always know the original purpose and use of the breed.
I find it very interesting that we have now good chances to use the latest results of research in modern genetics and veterinary as a support in breeding issues. Still to my opinion rational thinking and seeing the whole picture of breeding are the most important elements of quality dog breeding. At last but not least one should never forget the well being of our dogs

Here above some latest photos of my parents, dogs and me.
